    This was one of the most enjoyable reads I have had in a long time. The characters are so well developed and the plot has that many twists and turns! If you like a story with a strong female lead character coming into her own, this is for you! This story while dystopian is very relatable, ultimately it is a victory over violence against and the subjugation of women. I could never have guessed the plot twists, so original. If there is only one book you can read this year, let it be this one !

    In her debut novel, Namina Forna spins an action-packed fantasy set in the Kingdom of Otera, where a blood ritual measures women's worth. Our protagonist, Deka’s life, changes when she bleeds gold instead of red, branding her a demon and sentencing her to death. Even her father participates in her execution.

    Enter White Hands, a mysterious saviour who whisks Deka away to join an elite group of female warriors who bleed gold. Their mission? Protect Otera from the monstrous Deathshrieks.

    "The Gilded Ones" is the first instalment in a trilogy in which Deka uncovers truths about herself, her mother, Otera's history, and the true intentions of the Deathshrieks. Forna’s world-building is superb, tackling themes of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and trauma.

    The diverse cast of complex female characters is not just impressive; it's empowering. Each one is distinct and fleshed out, a tribute to women's strength and resilience. However, the romance subplot is unnecessary; the story stands strong without it.

    "The Gilded Ones" is a rallying cry to the oppressed and overlooked to claim what’s rightfully theirs.

    As I read, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this book would make an amazing movie. Since Forna is a screenwriter, I hope for a thrilling adaptation!
